Advantages - rotary swaging
The advantages of rotary swaging
Reduced production time The production time for swaged parts is considerably shorter than machine cutting.
Better product quality Rotary swaging improves the surface finish (roughness) and tensile strength and close tolerances are assured. This will substantially improve the physical properties of the material for compression, tension, bending and torsion.
Significant material savings Contrary to chip removal methods, the material is formed into shape. This means considerably better utilisation of materials. Costs for collecting, handling and disposal of chips are eliminated.
Reduced set-up times Generally, dies are changed within five minutes per station. Hydraulic feeds and other movement settings are continuously variable and can optimised for each workpiece.
Efficiency through automatic operation Depending on the shape of the workpiece, a pass-through method is used (load from front - unload from rear), or in the case of single ended cross sectional reduction an in-line transfer system is utilised. Small workpieces are formed on our rotary transfer machines. All automatic systems incorporate appropriate magazines (wire straightening and cutting off stations, tube and bar magazines with vibratory feed). Multi-station machines can be designed with either in-line or rotary transfer. These machines can be equipped with additional machining stations (turning, milling, drilling) and forming stations (production of outside splines, bending, thread forming, flaring, etc.).
Fewer production stages The external and internal shapes are finished in a single pass if the workpiece is formed over a mandrel. Non-round internal forms, for example splines, can be easily produced using a profiled mandrel. Furthermore, tapers, reductions and stretching can be performed simultaneously. Internal helixes can be worked without additional equipment.
No temperature restrictions Rotary swaging machines can form both steel and non-ferrous material by hot or cold working methods. There are no temperature limitations.
Favourable grain structure The chipless reduction of the cross section together with the resultant material forming has a positive effect upon the grain structure of the metal.
No restriction in terms of materials All metallic materials with sufficient ductility can be formed by swaging. Swaging steel, steel alloys, stainless steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals are no problem.
No preparation of the surface Rotary swaging does not require any specific surface treatment like phosphating, soaping etc.
Little hardening As oscillating forming takes place in many small processing steps, there is considerably less material hardening in relation to the amount of forming compared to other forming processes.
Environmentally friendly Unlike most other shaping methods, workpieces do not require a layer of lubricant medium. The coolant, if necessary, is located in a closed cycle.
