What is rotary swaging?
What is rotary swaging?
Rotary swaging, also formerly known as swaging, is process for precision forming of tubes, bars and other cylindrical workpieces.

Rotary swaging has all the advantages of cold forming.
  • Reduced production time
  • Close tolerances
  • Continuous grain pattern
  • High surface quality
  • Saves material
  • Workpiece weight reduction

It belongs to the category of net-shape-forming processes, which means the finished shape of the formed workpiece is obtained without, or with only a minimum amount of processing and cutting. The forming dies of the swaging machine are arranged concentrically around the workpiece.
The swaging dies perform high frequency radial movements with short strokes and applies compressive force onto the enclosed workpiece. In the majority of cases, a swaging unit consists of four dies. Depending on the application, between two and eight dies can also be used.

The forming process takes place in many small processing steps. Therefore, rotary swaging can be described as an incremental forming process.
One advantage compared to the continuous forming process is the homogenous material forming, which achieves high forming ratios.
